1. 1. Spectral integral reflectance, transmittance and the resulting absorption of intact and descaled butterfly wings of the black-winged Pachliopta aristolochiae (Papilionidae), the white-winged Pieris brassicae (Pieridae), and the yellow-winged Gonepteryx rhamni (Pieridae) were determined between 350 and 800 nm.
2. 2. Whereas in the black forewing of the dorsal basking Pachliopta almost all incident light is absorbed nearly independent of the wavelength and thus converted into heat, the white forewing of the body basking Pieris absorbs less than 20% in the visible range of the spectrum.
3. 3. The yellow hindwing of the lateral basking Gonepteryx absorbs to a higher degree than the Pierid wing, but—due to the sparsely arranged scales—transmittance is clearly increased (40–50% between 525 and 800 nm).
4. 4. The varying thermal characteristics of the different wings with reference to the color and arrangement of the scales and the different basking strategies of the butterflies are discussed.
The articles in this special issue range across such influences on climate as solar emissions, orbital precession, atmosphere, oceans, and precipitation, and generally approach, each in some context, human implications of these phenomena. The common underlying theme of all of the papers is the effect the phenomena have on radiation balance as measured by global average temperature. This introductory paper undertakes a formulation of radiation balance theory that makes it serviceable to students of regional science. The objective is to go beyond inference of cause and effect by correlation to causal accounts of cause and effect through regional climatic and cultural processes. This is accomplished primarily by revisualization of the energy system with regions as dependent spatiotemporal entities, and temporally through a protocol for regional episode definition. This special issue ofHuman Ecology consists of the American Anthropological Association Invited Symposium on Global Climate Change. 相似文献
Aim We reconstructed the phylogeny of the lichen genus Nephroma (Peltigerales) to assess the relationships of species endemic to Macaronesia. We estimated dates of divergences to test the hypothesis that the species arose in Macaronesia (neo‐endemism) versus the oceanic archipelagos serving as refugia for formerly widespread taxa (palaeo‐endemism). Location Cosmopolitan with a special focus on the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Methods DNA sequences were obtained from 18 species for three loci and analysed using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inferences. Divergence dates were estimated for the internal transcribed spacer (ITS)‐based phylogeny using a relaxed molecular clock. Reconstruction of the ancestral geographical range was conducted using the Bayesian 50% majority rule consensus tree under a parsimony method. Results The backbone phylogenetic tree was fully supported, with Nephroma plumbeum as sister to all other species. Four strongly supported clades were detected: the Nephroma helveticum, the N. bellum, the N. laevigatum and the N. parile clades. The latter two share a common ancestor and each includes a widespread Holarctic species (N. laevigatum and N. parile, respectively) and all species endemic to Macaronesia. The data suggest a neo‐endemic origin of Macaronesian taxa, a recent range expansion from Macaronesia of both widespread species, a range expansion limited to the Mediteranean Basin and south‐western Europe for another taxon, and a long dispersal event that resulted in a speciation event in the western parts of North America. Main conclusions The Macaronesian endemic species belong to two sister clades and originated from a most recent common ancestor (MRCA) shared with one widely distributed taxon, either N. parile or N. laevigatum. Estimates of the mean divergence dates suggest that the endemics originated in the archipelagos after the rise of the volcanic islands, along with the ancestor to the now widespread species, which probably expanded their range beyond Macaronesia via long‐distance dispersal. This study provides the first phylogenetic evidence of Macaronesian neo‐endemism in lichenized fungi and provides support for the hypothesis that oceanic islands may serve as a source for the colonization of continents. However, further data are needed to properly assess the alternative hypothesis, namely colonization from western North America. 相似文献
Abstract. As part of an overall ‘biodiversity crisis’, many amphibian populations are in decline throughout the world. Numerous factors have contributed to these declines, including habitat destruction, pathogens, increasing ultraviolet (UV) radiation, introduced non‐native species and contaminants. In this paper we review the contribution of increasing UV radiation and environmental contamination to the global decline of amphibian populations. Both UV radiation and environmental contaminants can affect amphibians at all life stages. Exposure to UV radiation and to certain contaminants can kill amphibians and induce sublethal affects in embryos, larvae and adults. Moreover, UV radiation and contaminants may interact with one another synergistically. Synergistic interactions of UV radiation with contaminants can enhance the detrimental effects of the contaminant and UV radiation. 相似文献
ABSTRACTIn 2002, a paper was published that highlighted the strong correlation noticed between melanoma incidence and the number of surrounding frequency modulation (FM) transmitters in the Nordic countries since 1955. In the report the development of future numbers of melanoma cases in Estonia were estimated since they got the FM broadcasting system rolled out not until 1992. Here, we report what happened since then in Estonia regarding melanoma cases per year. We also comment on the recent development in the Nordic countries, which is not very reassuring from a public health point of view. The last 10 years of melanoma incidence trends, increasing at an exponential rate, suggest that responsible authorities now need to consider possible influences also from other radiation sources in addition to UV radiation from the sun. 相似文献

Ginsenosides, also known as ginseng saponins, are the principal bioactive ingredients of ginseng, which are responsible for its diverse pharmacological activities. The present work aimed to assess skin anti-photoaging properties of ginsenoside Rb2 (Rb2), one of the predominant protopanaxadiol-type ginsenosides, in human epidermal keratinocyte HaCaT cells under UV-B irradiation. When the cultured keratinocytes were subjected to Rb2 prior to UV-B irradiation, Rb2 displayed suppressive activities on UV-B-induced reactive oxygen species elevation and matrix metalloproteinase-2 expression and secretion. However, Rb2 at the used concentrations was unable to modulate cellular survivals in the UV-B-irradiated keratinocytes. In brief, Rb2 possesses a protective role against the photoaging of human keratinocyte cells under UV-B irradiation. 相似文献
In barley seedlings (Hordeum vulgare L.) during two days after irradiation of shoots with UV-B (0.5 W/m2, 6 h), the rate of elongation of primary roots decreased 2–3 times compared to that in control plants. The modulus of elasticity of roots (ε) increased at most twofold in 12 h after the onset of irradiation; the hydraulic conductivity (Lp) diminished by a factor of two in 12 h, and the root osmotic pressure gradually decreased by 0.08 MPa in 24 h. Changes in ε and Lp were shown to be related to oxidative stress in growing roots, which was evidenced from the increase in H2O2 level up to 15-fold increase in 6 h and in activity of guaiacol peroxidase (3.5-fold in 12 h). After 48 h, the characteristics of oxidative metabolism and root characteristics ε and Lp became identical in untreated and treated plants. On the third day, the rate of root growth in treated plants reached its initial value. It is concluded that the main causes of retardation of root growth under these conditions were as follows: the increase in cell wall rigidity related to formation of oxidative cross-links in the apoplast and the decrease in root osmotic pressure due to limited transport of assimilates from irradiated leaves. After the intensity of UV-B irradiation applied to shoots was enhanced (1.6 W/m2, 4 h), another physiological status of roots was observed on the 2nd day characterized by twofold increase in Lp, tenfold decreased root elongation rate, and by a progressing increase of root diameter in growing roots. The comparison of root responses induced by irradiation of shoots with the root responses to sodium salicylate and ABA suggests that both agents might participate in the transmission of signals from irradiated leaves to roots. 相似文献
